Llanidloes edge rugby derby

17/09/2019 @ 01:38

Llanidloes took the local bragging rights with a tight 20-17 victory over Newtown in the WRU Division Two (north).

With both sides looking for their first league points of the season, it was always going to be a tight affair.

But the hosts, Llanidloes, raced in to a 10-0 lead within the first five minutes, leaving the visitors shell-shocked. However, a try on the stroke of half time reduced the deficit for an interval scoreline of 13-7.

Early in the second period, Llanidloes increased their lead with a well-worked try and conversion to take a commanding 20-7 lead.

Newtown then enjoyed a good period of possession and started to get points of their own on the board, making it 20-17 with five minutes to go.

Llanidloes, down to 13 men in the last five minutes due to two yellow cards, defended heroically to hang on to their narrow lead to earn the bragging rights as Newtown threw everything in to attack.
