Boxing Day final for future Mont Cups?

24/05/2011 @ 09:26
As tonight’s second semi-final of the Montgomeryshire Cup is cancelled, calls to revamp the competition have once again been made, this time from the official in charge.

Montgomery will now play Llanrhaeadr in Friday’s final after Carno pulled out of tonight’s match with the Spar Division Two champions, a night after Caersws withdrew from their semi-final with the Division One champions.

Russell Cadwallader (Guilsfield), Mike Evans (Caersws) and Clive McNamee (Montgomery) are just some of the top bosses who have called for a revamp after last season’s final was held over to January of this year, and competition secretary Bernie Jones has now said it needs to be looked at.

“If it is to regain some of the spark that it used to have, we need to look at playing it earlier in the season and maybe have a Boxing Day or a New Year’s Day final,” he said.

Last night Llanrhaeadr assistant boss Jamie Davies weighed into the debate suggesting it could make a “good pre-season tournament”.

Meanwhile, the Amateur League Consolation Cup final between Guilsfield Reserves and Kerry Reserves is expected to take place on Thursday night, probably at Berriew.
