Jones gets Wales call-up

Wales manager Jayne Ludlow has included 15-year-old Newtown High School student Carrie Jones in her 22-player squad for the opening Euro 2021 qualifiers against the Faroe Islands and Northern Ireland.

Jones, who has captained Wales at under-17 level and has trained previously with the senior side, is the youngest player to be included in the squad after receiving her first senior call-up.

Ludlow will be without Wales’ most capped player Jess Fishlock after the midfielder suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament whilst playing for her club side Reign FC last month.

Fellow midfielder Rachel Rowe has recovered from an ACL injury of her own and is included in the squad alongside Reading team-mate Angharad James, who was rested for the recent friendly against New Zealand.

Megan Wynne and Elise Hughes, who both signed their first professional deals with Tottenhamand Evertonrespectively, are included in the squad.

After guiding Wales to within touching distance of a place at this summer’s World Cup, captain Sophie Ingle will again lead the the team.

Record goalscorer Helen Ward, Loren Dykes and Natasha Harding are among some of the more experienced names to be included.

Wales travel to Torshavn to take on the Faroe Islands on August 29, before hosting Northern Ireland at Rodney Parade five days later.
