Berriew will play host to the world’s best bowls team this week for an international match between Wales and Australia.

Bowls Australia have travelled with many of their top stars, and will be using the match on Thursday and Friday to acclimatise to a British summer as part of their preparations for the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

There will be four sessions on Thursday starting at 8.40am and finishing at 6pm, and then 8.30am until 1pm on Friday.

There is a very strong local flavour to the Wales team with no less than seven of the team based in Montgomeryshire, with three from Berriew alone. The women and the overall team are being managed by the host club’s Hazel Wilson, with Machynlleth’s Barry Fleming in charge of the men.

“It will be a great experience for the players and an opportunity for spectators to come and see bowls being played at the top level,” said Hazel.
