‘Not a good day at the office’

06/05/2011 @ 10:20

Tony Springer endured his most torrid afternoon since taking the helm at Newtown Cricket Club who slumped to just 62 all out in their latest Marston’s Shropshire Premier League match.

Batting first, visitors Wem recovered from the early loss of their openers to Craig Davies to post an impressive 279 off their 50 overs with youngster Matthew Cohen scoring an unbeaten 101 and Martyn Davies smashing 92.

Newtown looked daunted by the task ahead of them and this wasnt made easier by the loss of David Laird (4), Stuart Putson (2) and Tom Foulkes cheaply.

At the other end, Steve Davies was fighting as a lone ranger and cut a frustrated figure as he saw wickets tumbling at the other end. He departed for a well made 31, which proved to be the only score above 10 on the batting card.

The skipper said: “It was a bad day at the office, but we are hoping to show some ‘bouncebackability’ this weekend at Newport.”
