Maldwyn Harriers' runners ensured that Powys secured a silver medal in the Boys Race at the Welsh Schools Cross-Country Championships held at Penlan fields, Brecon.

Ollie Jones secured a silver medal, followed by Callum Morgan in fifth, Aled Breeze in sixth, Deri Mccluskey 27th and Harvey Gill 72nd. Collectively the team won silver.

The top three of Ollie, Callum and Aled (pictured) have secured automatic qualification to the Welsh Team that will travel to Dublin for the SIAB Cross Country next month.

In the Junior Girls, Maddie Griffiths put in a gutsy performance to finish ninth, with Caitlyn Bloor 53rd, Gwen Kuipers 55th, Chloe Murton-Davies 61st and Lucy Sayce 69th.

Both Carwyn Owen and Dillon Gill secured good results in their race - 13th and 14th respectively -  to help the Powys team claim the bronze medal.

In the Middle Girls, Carys Breeze was 41st and newcomer Nia Jones was 61st. In Middle Boys, Deiniol Owen was 47th and sprinter Lewis Wilde was 65th - both having just moved up an age group.

Coach Dave Peters said: “There were fantastic performances by Ollie, Callum and Aled at the Welsh Schools Cross Country Championships with their well-earned selection to the Welsh Team.

“True rewards for all the hard work they have put in over the past 12 months and they are the pinnacle of a strong endurance group at Maldwyn Harriers which are superbly led by the endurance coaches Martin, Hefin and Todd.

“All the Maldwyn runners at the Welsh Schools championships ran very well and were a credit to Montgomeryshire and Powys. It just shows that hard work really pays dividends and they all do it with a smile on their faces.”
