Newtown secure top-six spot

Newtown secured a top-six place in the Welsh Premier this afternoon as clubs close in on the league’s new year split.

The Robins lit up Latham Park with a 2-1 win to complete a festive double over neighbours, Aberywtwyth Town, despite having to cling on at the end

Neil Mitchell gave Newtown a first minute lead and it wasn’t until the 60th minute when Nick Rushton grabbed the second goal after being sent clear by Sam Phillips.

Home keeper Dave Jones played a big part in Newtown’s win, producing a string of fine first half saves to keep Aberystwyth at bay.

Craig Williams denied the Seasiders an 83rd minute goal when he produced an incredible off-the-line clearance when it looked like Ryan Wollacott had reduced the arrears.

But with the game approaching injury time Aber were back in the game when Ahmadi was put through by Walker and he chipped over the advancing keeper to make it 2-1.

The Robins survived a 94th minute penalty appeal when Mendes went down in the box before the Latham Park party began.
