Welsh Cup wipe out

No clubs from Montgomeryshire will be going into Monday’s hat for the fourth round of the Welsh Cup after Newtown and Guilsfield suffered defeats.

Holders Connah’s Quay Nomads survived a scare at the villagers, coming from 2-0 down at half time to progress in extra-time. Callum Bromley and Steve Blenkinsopp had both scored in the first half for the Guils, but Callum Morris and Michael Bakare levelled in the second half for Andy Morrison’s side. Michael Wilde and Ryan Wignall then notched in extra time to ensure the Nomads progressed.

Rhyl came from behind to claim an upset at Latham Park as the Lilywhites beat Newtown 2-1. Neil Mitchell scored on 23 minutes for the hosts, but second half goals from former Robins forward Gareth Partridge and an Aaron Hassall winner secured the win for Gareth Wilson’s side.

Berriew, Llanfair United and Welshpool are right back in the MMP Mid Wales League title hunt after leaders Caersws were beaten at Aberaeron 3-2.

Berriew celebrated manager David Jones being named Manager of the Month by closing the gap on second-placed Llanidloes who they beat 5-2.

Llanfair United, with games in hand, beat Tywyn Bryncrug while Welshpool Town won 4-0 on Friday night against Bow Street.

In the second division, Montgomery and Four Crosses won to boost their title hopes with Waterloo Rovers seeing their game against leaders Hay St Mary’s cancelled.
