The North Wales League season kicked off on Saturday with wins for Newtown, Llanidloes and Welshpool.
Welshpool built on their Mid Wales Shield win the week before to edge past a young but powerful Teirw Nant side 3-0, but their opponents this Saturday, COBRA, were beaten at Newtown.
With players missing due a wedding, COBRA faced a well organised Newtown unit who ran out 8-3 winners with a late show. After Will Worthington had kicked the Meifod men into a half-time lead, Newtown finished strongly with a late try, followed by a penalty to secure the points.
Llanidloes were in superb form, winning 45-7 at Abergele with winger Carwyn Jones scoring a hat-trick.
