Newtown, Monty continue form

Newtown are on a roll after demolishing struggling Cound in the Shropshire Premier League.

Tom Anderson took 5-29 and fellow opening bowler Dave Anthony bagged 3-33 before Ally Laird finished the visitors off for 66 with two wickets in four balls.

The reply was swift with Tom Goodman (28no) steering them home in the eighth over with one wicket down.

Despite a solid 51 from skipper Russell Cadwallader, Welshpool’s move up Division One was thwarted by a nine-wicket defeat at Knockin.

There was little support for the veteran as his team stumbled their way to 138 all out before the hosts eased home in the 33^rd over.

Montgomery beat Hodnet, Peplow and Tibberton for a second time in three days when they romped to a four-wicket victory in Shropshire Division Two on Saturday.

Youngster Charlie Kinsey put in another excellent performance following his promotion to the first team with a four wicket haul that included both openers.

Kinsey’s figures of 4-43 are his best to date in the first team, while Harry Wilkinson (2-19) and Andrew Barker (2-33) also claimed two victims apiece.

In reply, Montgomery knocked off the total inside 33 overs with four wickets to spare. Ieuan Griffiths top scored with 44, followed by Thomas Corfield (31), Tim Davies (30) and Sam Williams (21).

With league leaders Ellesmere losing away to Shifnal it means the gap at the top of the division has been cut to just 27 points with the two clubs set to meet each other on August 4.

Guilsfield and Llanidloes were without Division Four fixtures on Saturday.

Montgomery II moved off the foot of Shropshire Reserve Division One with a crucial victory against Knockin and Kinnerley.

The home side put in their best batting performance of the season as openers Matthew Jones (75) and George Corfield (32) gave Montgomery the perfect platform to build a score of 214.

When Corfield was bowled by Joe Kynaston, Rob Yewdall entered the crease and made a quick 59 as Montgomery ended their innings 214-2 off 40 overs.

Yewdall (4-32) then starred with the ball as Montgomery dismissed the visitors for 144, while Neil Tuffin got two wickets for 27 runs.

Newtown II’s Division Two title tilt remains on track following a comfortable 44-run win at Cound II.

Danny Foulkes (52no), Sam Morris (48), Ricky Davies (36) and Richard Smouth (34no) enjoyed time at the crease as Newtown posted a healthy 234-4.

Jonathon Davies 3-38 led the Newtown chase for wickets, as Cound finished well short on 190-7 from their 40 overs.
