Guils star switches to Caersws

Gareth Jones has called time on his Guilsfield career after 17 years to take up a player-management role at Caersws.

Jones said the offer came “completely out of the blue” but was one that he wasn’t going to let go. He will be number two to newly appointed manager Mark Griffiths.

“Opportunities to be involved in both the management and playing aspect of a huge club like Caersws don’t come up often, it was too big of an opportunity to turn down,” said Jones. “It’s a huge challenge ahead, but that’s what I thrive on and I’m looking forward to working with everyone at the club.

“After 17 years of playing in the Cymru Alliance with the Guils, it wasn’t an easy decision to leave but one that I knew would always come, albeit a little earlier than I thought but being an opportunist the challenge offered at Caersws was a huge pull factor.

“It was always an ambition to go into the management of a club and when one of the biggest clubs in Mid Wales offered it, it was a huge compliment to me.

“I’d like to thank everyone at Guilsfield Football Club for an incredible 17 seasons. I have some unbelievable memories in a Guils shirt and I loved every moment, even the tough times.

“I wish the committee, Lenny, Jase, Bern and all the lads the best of luck in what is a tough Cymru Alliance next season.”

Caersws welcomed their new recruit by announcing: “Gareth’s work ethic, winning mentality and experience will be a great asset both on and off the pitch.”
