Anything the men can do...

Newtown Ladies Hockey Club hit Llanfair Caereinion for six on Saturday to retain the North Wales League title at Maldwyn Sports Centre. It came on the weekend that the town's Men's Club took the North Wales Shield.

It was yet another strong performance from the ladies who were ahead inside the first 10 minutes through Llewela Richards’s shot from an acute angle. That score was doubled shortly afterwards. A well worked penalty corner saw Clare Bonsall’s strike deflected in to the Llanfair goal by Nicky Jones.

Llanfair rarely threatened the Newtown defence, with side as a whole in dominant form. A third came from good work down the right for Beth Lewis to fire the ball home.

Newtown started the second half with the same tempo as the first. The fourth came from a well worked penalty corner which saw Jacqui Loxam sweep the ball past the advancing keeper.

Town were now playing some outstanding hockey and Emma Rowbottom, who had worked tirelessly upfront, was rewarded with a brace of goals towards the end of the game to make it 6-0.

That victory, coupled with Welshpool’s 5-3 defeat to Rhyl, secured the championship for Newtown who travel to Llandudno on Saturday as League Champions.
