COBRA overpowered Newtown with a four-try performance to claim the local bragging rights and a vital bonus point win that moves them up to third in the league.
COBRA showed great determination and skill to overcome Newtown in perfect playing conditions. Newtown started the brighter and should have took the lead however last ditch tackling by a scrambling COBRA defence kept Newtown at bay.
Newtown took their deserved lead with a penalty which stung COBRA into action. They responded immediately as strong runs from Hywel Jones and Dorian Lloyd created space for makeshift centre Alun Jones to score under the posts.
The second try came soon after as fullback Sion Wyn Williams gathered a clearing kick from the restart to break down the right before stepping inside the cover defence to score. Scrum half Alwyn Williams coverted both tries.
Newtown responded with two penalties either side of half time to bring them back into contention and leave the match nicely poised.
But COBRA upped the tempo and extended their lead with two penalty goals from Alwyn Williams. COBRA were now in the ascendency and stretched the Newtown defence with strong carries breaking through the tackles. The third try came as outside half Dorian Lloyd broke clear and fed flanker Richard Rees in support for a clear run to the line.
From a scrum on halfway Sion Wyn Williams took a great running line and scythed through the Newtown defence but was brought down just short of the try line. He fed Alwyn Williams in close support who was able to score COBRA's fourth.
Two yellow cards for Rhodri Evans and Endaf Jones forced COBRA to defend for large periods of the final quarter. But the defence was strong and held out until injury time when Newtown spread the ball wide and scored a well worked try.
