Newtown failed to come up to their manager's billing, losing 2-0 in the Welsh Premier League.
Adam Roscrow claimed a brace as second-placed Cardiff Met moved within a point of Welsh Premier leaders The New Saints with a 2-0 home win over Newtown.
The first goal came from the penalty spot in the 37th-minute when referee Richard Harrington ruled that Luke Boundford had handled and Roscrow headed his second just past the hour mark from a pinpoint Eliot Evans cross to take his season's goal tally to six.
Hughes had predicted his Robins side would bounce back with a return to form but he was left disappointed.
But not as disappointed as Caersws manager Graham Wvans who saw his side go down 3-1 at home to Gresford in the Huws Gray Alliance.
Llanidloes and Berriew made FAW Trophy progress.
