Clowes signs for Robins

Newtown manager Chris Hughes has made his fifth signing of the summer transfer window by adding Leon Clowes to his defensive ranks.

Clowes, 25, has joined the Robins after spending the second half of last season with relegated Airbus.

After losing Shane Sutton earlier in the window, Hughes has now added two central defenders, in Sam Litchfield and Clowes to bolster the backline.

A former youth and reserve team captain at Wrexham, Clowes was offered a short term deal at the Dragons in 2014.

However he opted for the Welsh Premier League and signed for Bangor City.

He spent two and a half seasons at Nantporth, where he made his debut in August 2014 in a 3-1 League Cup win over Newtown.

In January, he signed for Airbus, where he had spent time on loan while at Wrexham.

He has now opted for a switch to the Robins, and Hughes was delighted to bring in a defender with Clowes' experience.

Hughes said: "Leon is a good signing for us, he is big and strong and brings experience to the squad.

"He has been a key man in Bangor's side over the last few years, and has proven pedigree in the league.

"His signing, along with Sam, brings competition for places at the back, and we are pleased that we have got the deal over the line."

Clowes will join up with his team mates this week, before the squad take part in their first pre-season friendly against Berriew on Tuesday evening.
