Anthony inspires Newtown

Newtown have picked up some early season momentum with a crushing win in the Shropshire Premier League.

Despite being put into bat by Market Drayton, Newtown’s batsmen shared the runs to chalk up a respectable 166-5 off their 50 overs with Sam Cooke (35no) top scoring.

Opening bowler John Anthony then took command with 6-19 from 13.2 lethal overs to reduce the hosts to 108 all out in the 40th over.

It was a largely disappointing day for Welshpool and Montgomery in Division One.

Welshpool toiled for nine points in a losing draw at Bomere Heath who had set a daunting 245-8. In reply Welshpool held out on 155-9, thanks to 50 from Matt Knight.

Montgomery could only manage 120 all out in chasing Cound’s 140 target. James Corfield was a highlight, scoring 41 not out and taking four wickets.

Guilsfield picked up a convincing seven-wicket win in Division Four after dismissing Quayside for 106. In reply, opener Sam Griffiths was unbeaten on 65 to guide the villagers home.

In Reserve Division Two, there were defeats for Montgomery II and Newtown II against Ludlow II and Market Drayton II respectively while Welshpool II were beaten at home by Cae Glas II in Reserve Division Three.
