Good Evans! Tom makes u-turn

Clive McNamee is a happy man this week.

The veteran Montgomery boss saw his side climb to the top of the Spar Division Two following an incredible 14-match unbeaten run.

And, one by one, he has welcomed back his prodigal sons who had ventured to pastures new but realised the grass was not greener on the other side.

The latest to return last night was midfielder Tom Evans (right) who called time on his brief step up to Alliance football at Technogroup Welshpool to return for Monty’s final push for the title.

The youngster was believed to have been frustrated to have been slotted into a left back role and is set to return to the Montgomery engine room this weekend.

And Evans treads a well worn path back to Monty with Tony Meredith, Shane Kirkham and Andy Green all having a change of heart this season.

“Like it was with the other boys, it is great to have Tom back,” said McNamee. “The lads know the ambition we have at the club and want to be a part of it.”

McNamee says everything is going as planned this season and despite some tough matches approaching, he is confident his side will be in Division One next season.

“We targeted top by the end of February because March is mainly cup matches and I didn’t want to get too far behind, so we were right on cue,” he said.

“There is still a long way to go and any one of the top four are still in with a great chance. We still have Tregaron (twice) and Rhosgoch at home and these will be massive games.

“I relate the team spirit back to the Welshpool team of 20 years ago. The lads enjoy each other’s company and are a pleasure to work with. They trust each other and at the moment there is not another place I would rather be. We look at what Llansantffraid and Llanidloes have achieved this season and we want to be a part of that. Both these clubs have been promoted from the Amateur league in the last two seasons and are a force in the Spar.”
