Club quits Spar League

Bettws Football Club has dropped a pre-season bombshell by calling it a day.

The village club has been rising through the ranks recently and enjoyed a fine debut in the Spar Mid Wales League Two last season.

But citing the loss of players, the club has informed the league it will withdraw, and could well call it a day after stating “the squad is too small to compete in any league and we feel it is best to withdraw now rather than later”.

The club’s Malcolm Phillips said: “It is with great sadness and regret that I have to inform you that Bettws FC are unable to raise a team to play in Spar Mid Wales league 2 for the forthcoming season.

“I apologise on behalf of the club for this decision and the obvious inconvenience it is going to cause you. Several players have left and we have been unable to replace them leaving us with a squad too small to compete in any league and we feel it is best to withdraw now rather than later. We all regret this decision but I'm afraid its unavoidable.”

It is the latest high profile withdrawal of what seemed to be an ambitious club with Forden calling it a day recently, citing similar reasons.
