Store manager gets more than he bargained for

Newtown supermarket manager Jamie Davies got more than he bargained for when he went to work recently.

Jamie, the store manager at Morrisons supermarket in Newtown, let customers wax his legs in return for a donation to the Lingen Davies Action Appeal.

The 31-year-old from Welshpool agreed to the eye-watering challenge after a member of his team, Michelle Powell, returned to work last week following radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatment for breast cancer.

Michelle Powell, of Dolfor, near Newtown, said: “When diagnosed with stage three breast cancer I received fantastic support and was treated at the Lingen Davies Centre at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital (RSH).

“The staff at the Lingen Davies Centre were absolutely great and now I want to give something back, so I thank Jamie for agreeing to have his legs waxed to help raise funds for the charity’s pledge to purchase an additional world-class Linear Accelerator for the Cancer and Haematology Centre.”

Mr Davies added: “Michelle has been through a really difficult period in her life but has been wonderful throughout. She has shown tremendous strength and is an inspiration to us all.”

The Lingen Davies Action Appeal has pledged to raise £750,000 by the end of 2016 to help fund an additional Linear Accelerator for the Cancer and Haematology Centre RSH.

A Linear Accelerator delivers radiotherapy treatment and a third machine is needed to ensure waiting times do not increase.

Liz Kyle, fundraising officer at Lingen Davies, added: “We are extremely grateful to Michelle and Jamie for raising this money.

“We want to ensure as many patients as possible in Shropshire and mid Wales can receive radiotherapy treatment quickly and with minimum disruption to their daily lives. Without our fundraising people would have to travel to other hospitals much further afield.”

The leg waxing stunt has so far raised more than £706.04 but further donations can be made online by visiting http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/fundraiser-web/fundraiser/showFundraiserProfilePage.action?userUrl=JamieDavies84
