Residents in Newtown are being urged to ‘Say NO to Ageism’ this Thursday (1 October) as part of Older People’s Day.
Older People’s Day is the international day of older persons, which celebrates the amazing contribution made by older people across the world. Now Powys County Council will be joining forces with the Older People’s Commissioner for Wales to Say NO to Ageism on Thursday 1 October.
Cllr Darren Mayor, Cabinet Member for Older People, said: “Research shows that over a third of older people – that’s over a quarter of a million older people in Wales – have experienced some form of ageism.
“In today’s society this is not acceptable and that is why we are supporting the Older People’s Commissioner for Wales’ campaign to ‘Say NO to Ageism’ and we are urging our residents to join us in this campaign.
Older People’s Commissioner for Wales, Sarah Rochira, said: “Stereotypes of older people are still common and derogatory and disrespectful language is still used so often to describe people once they reach a certain age.
“My position is clear: this is simply not acceptable. By working together to ‘Say NO to Ageism’ and highlighting the amazing contribution made by older people in Wales, we can change the way society thinks about growing older and make a big difference to people’s lives.”
