Council to decide on secondary education provision

28/09/2015 @ 07:15

Councillors are to discuss a review of secondary education in Montgomeryshire today (Tuesday) which will affect schools in Newtown, Llanidloes, Llanfair Caereinion and others.

The council will consider whether there is a need for a bilingual secondary school or schools in the area and if it agrees that there is, then what will happen to secondary education provision in Montgomeryshire overall.

Consultants have recommended a “category 2a” school or schools. This means at least 80 per cent of subjects are taught in the medium of Welsh, except for English and Welsh.

Such a category also means that one or two subjects are taught to some pupils in English or in both languages.

The move would mean changes to existing secondary school provision throughout the area.

If the Cabinet agrees to the recommendation a further report will be needed to set out how secondary education is configured in the area.

Today's meeting will be webcast from 10am via www.powys.public-i.tv.

Residents on Twitter have also been invited to join a discussion using #powyswebcast

“The cabinet will be considering a report on the Review of Secondary Education in North Powys with a focus on Welsh-Stream Medium/Dual Stream Education and the webcast will provide access to both the meeting itself and the reports being considered by cabinet,” said a council spokesperson.

Leader, Councillor Barry Thomas said: “We have a number of important education items on the agenda for our cabinet meeting and have decided to webcast so that people can follow the proceedings, either during or after the meeting”.

The webcast can be viewed from 10am today (Tuesday) by going to the council's webcast portal at www.powys.public-i.tv on an internet device with Flash or Silverlight software installed.

The webcast will also be available in the webcast archive for a period of six months.

Twitter users can use #PowysWebcast to join the conversation whilst the meeting is underway.
