A local chapel is to take part in a national initiative to highlight its history in local life.

Pentre Llifior, between Bettws Cedewain and Berriew will opening its doors as part of CADW’s annual “Open Doors” weekend on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th September.

It is the third year the chapel has taken part.

Open from 11am to 4pm on Saturday and 11am to 2pm on Sunday, visitors will be able to learn about the history of the chapel from its construction in 1798 by John Evans, a local builder from Llandyssil, its connections with Gibraltar and further afield and then on to members’ support of the abolition of slavery in the 1800's.

“The restoration of the chapel and development of the Preachers stable facilities, along with younger members travelling to South Korea in 2010 and toilet twinning, make up more recent history which, in time, will become part of this living chapel's story,” said Mandy Thomas, joint co-ordinator of the weekend.

"There is usually something to interest everyone.

"Every building has a story to tell and our quizzes - with the help of the display boards - are designed to make this learning experience enjoyable.

“For the younger caller our family of friendly dragons offer the opportunity to learn in a fun way and all visitors are most welcome to browse at their leisure, though there will be chapel members on hand to chat and assist if required.

“So, if you want to know why the chapel houses a beer barrel, do come along and find out.”

Throughout the event light refreshments will be available and a small car park coupled with disabled toilet facilities make this event accessible for all.

The chapel is on cycle route 81, midway between Bettws Cedewain and Berriew and further information may be obtained from Andrew on 01938 555376 or Mandy via e-mail: tito@talktalk.net.

Worship on Sunday 13th will be at 2.30pm and take the form of an informal All Age Cell Group and an open invitation is extended to all.
