Inquiry continues to hear evidence on planned bypass

A planning inspector will be told on Friday that the majority of residents in Newtown want the planned road bypass to go ahead.

Since last Thursday a public inquiry being held in Newtown into the planned bypass has heard from numerous individuals, groups and organisations about their views for the planned road.

On Friday, Montgomeryshire AM, Russell George, will take part in the inquiry and is expected to tell the inspector that the majority of residents want it to happen and sooner rather than later.

The public inquiry was triggered after an alternative route through the Mochdre Industrial Estate was proposed instead of the official route, with 70 people supporting it.

But Mr George is expected to tell the inquiry that the official proposed route is the best option as the alternative would mean the demolition of existing business premises which could affect jobs and investment.

He is expected to say that over the past four years surveys he has undertaken and discussions held with residents and businesses has demonstrated overwhelming support for the construction of the town bypass.

“I believe the bypass will be hugely important to the economy of towns such as Newtown, Llanidloes and Machynlleth,” Mr George said before the inquiry.

“It is urgently needed to support the Mid Wales economy.

“There is a high proportion of vehicles including tourists who are currently avoiding the congested town rather than enjoying a refreshing break and to experience what Newtown has to offer.”
