Centre prices to remain the same, says new operator

A new private operator has taken over the running of Maldwyn Leisure Centre today, promising the same admission prices and a new booking system.

Not-for-profit company, Freedom Leisure, says it will be £2.5m across 15 sport and leisure centres in the county.

This will include work to make Maldwyn Leisure Centre more energy efficient, including new air handling and low energy lighting.

It says the comprehensive Starfish Swimming Lesson Scheme programme already in place in Powys will continue under Freedom Leisure which will be extending the timetable to offer more lesson options and cater for the high demand.

This comes as Powys County Council revealed yesterday that it is cutting the amount of free swimming for under 16s and over 60s (see MyNewtown story - http://bit.ly/1Kqe8tZ)

“We are delighted to be in Powys and pleased to be working closely with our new colleagues and Council partners here,” says Ivan Horsfall Turner, Freedom Leisure Managing Director.

“We fully respect the layout of the county and the individual character and profile of each site and are looking forward to helping all our customers fulfil their leisure, fitness and health goals.”

Staff at the Powys sites have remained in place and are joined by new colleagues to ensure smooth running of the sites.

A new software system will enable efficient communications, online booking of classes and easier two-way communication between Freedom Leisure and its customers.

Face-to-face feedback opportunities will also be set up including forums and ‘meet the manager’ events.

“I am very pleased to be handing the keys over to Freedom Leisure now and am looking forward to working closely with the team,” says Councillor Graham Brown, Cabinet Member for Leisure.

“We have every confidence in Freedom Leisure to deliver top quality sport and leisure facilities to our communities and I’m sure its high level of experience and expertise will greatly benefit the residents of Powys."

Prices will not change under Freedom Leisure’s management.  Customers can still pay-as-they-go for activities and monthly memberships allowing unlimited use of the facilities have been introduced. Furthermore, people who prefer the convenience of paying by direct debit will have the chance to do so.
