Carnival call for volunteers

18/01/2011 @ 12:41

The search is on to find Newtown’s Carnival Queen amidst concerns that one of Newtown’s oldest events is short of volunteers.

The Carnival has been a mainstay on the Newtown calendar for decades but in recent years it has been run by a small, but dedicated, band of volunteers who are now keen for fresh blood to come forward to help the event flourish.

“It’s got to the point where we would really like to welcome more people to the committee,” said Councillor Phil Watkins who is a Newtown Carnival Trustee. “We are very keen for people to come forward to bring some fresh ideas. The Carnival is a big event run by a small group of dedicated people.

“It is a 12-month committee and doesn’t just get together before the event. It is increasingly becoming harder each year to organise and we need more people’s help.”

Cllr. Watkins denied that the Carnival was in good shape but added that an injection of new ideas and energy would ensure its long term future.

Anyone interest in getting involved is invited to attend the AGM being held on February 7 at 7.30pm at the Monty Club on Broad Street.

The search for the 2011 Carnival Queen has been launched and entries (with photo) should reach Mrs Jen Reynolds at 51, Lon Glan-yr-Afon, Vaynor by February 10. Mrs Reynolds can also be reached on 0783 821 6331. Applicants must be 15 years old or over and the selection will take place at the Monty Club on February 15.

As well as taking centre stage for the Carnival, the Carnival Queen will attend a number of other civic events throughout her term.

The selection for attendants will take place at North Side Hall, Upper Canal Road, on March 5 at 6.30pm. Entries welcome from 5-12 years.
