Police investigating the unexplained death of well-known Newtown man Thomas Morgan have been granted permission to detain a man for questioning for a further 36 hours.

Mr Morgan, 63, known as ‘Tommy’ (left), was found dead at his home earlier this week and police have also sealed off two Newtown addresses with forensic officers on the scene. Officers continue house to house enquiries and have set up an incident room at Newtown Police Station.

A police spokesperson said: “Following the death of Mr Thomas Morgan an incident room has been set up at Newtown Police Station.  A local man has been arrested in connection with this death.  On Thursday, Magistrates granted police a further detention period of 36 hours to interview this man.

“Our enquiries continue with friends and associates of Mr Morgan.  A trained Family Liaison Officer has been in contact with the family and is keeping them informed of developments.  It is clear that Tommy was a well liked and a well known local man who spent a lot of time in the town centre.

“In addition police have sealed off two addresses in Newtown and forensic officers continue to examine both of these scenes in a search for evidence.  Also officers have been carrying out house to house enquiries with neighbouring properties.”

A key feature of the enquiry has been to try and piece together the movements of Tommy. It is now believed that he left his home address on the Maesyrhandir Estate on Monday morning.  Sightings have been reported on Llanidloes Road at about 8am and on Broad St in Newtown at about 9am.
