Students take aim

Students from NPTC Group’s Newtown campus have been steadying their aim while taking part in four weeks of archery lessons.

Making a break from their usual lessons in art and design, plumbing, and engineering, the learners have escaped the intensity of the classroom and headed outside for some fresh air and adrenaline as part of their tutorial sessions.

Helen Owen, 5x30 officer, explained: “My role in college is to give students and staff the opportunity to take part in an activity.

"These learners wanted to do more after some initial taster sessions. Their course is quite intense so they wanted to get outside and just completely switch off for an hour.

"Their class representative approached me with regards to facilitating the archery, and the rest is history."

Matt Hill from Staylittle Outdoor Centre has been delivering the archery sessions for the learners, who are using the activity in order to complete their STEPS folders.

Helen added: “By the end of week four, they have been hitting the target from a good distance.

"They have really improved week on week.  We rounded up the sessions with a bit of a competition with overall winner, David Lloyd, from electrical engineering, totalling a score of 168 points.  Nathan Humble won the plumbing group with 128 points, and Sam Webster from art and design won the group with 110 points.”
