Man jailed after threats to former partner

A Newtown man has been jailed for 27 months after he threatened to stab his former partner and burn down her home.

The Integrated Offender Management (IOM) team in Powys ensured Simon Paul Jones, described as a prolific offender, was returned to prison for threats he made towards his former partner after he refused help from the team to stop offending.

Jones was only released from prison in October after serving a sentence for a number of offences.

Whilst in prison he had made threats to stab his former partner and burn down her home, according to the IOM.

"As a result of this and other offences that came to light Jones was re-arrested less than 24 hours after being released," said an IOM spokesperson.

"The return to prison was thanks to the work of the IOM team and the Protecting Vulnerable People (PVP) teams in Dyfed-Powys Police."

The IOM team made up of Police Officers, members of the Probation service and people from other partner agencies in the county to look to help prolific offenders address their offending and re-integrate into society.

Help is provided to tackle the reasons why regular offenders commit crime and support them to change their lifestyle.

"If, as in the case of Simon Paul Jones, the offender refuses help from the IOM team then they will be the subject of intense monitoring with the aim of conviction for any offences they commit," said the spokesperson.

"The IOM scheme has proved an effective way to reduce crime."

The offenders managed on the scheme in the 12 month period prior to joining committed a total of 206 crimes but the same offenders in the 12 months after being managed by IOM committed 73 crimes.

"This shows a significant drop in crimes meaning 133 less victims of crime in the Powys area," added the spokesperson.
