Snow back but Council confident of coping

The snow has returned but Powys County Council is confident that it can cope with the latest weather woes and keep the main roads moving.

Stocks of salt have run to as low as 25 per cent of capacity following the five-week wintery end to 2010, but the milder start to 2011 has enabled the council to prepare for the rest of the winter.

A spokesperson confirmed: “As of yesterday (Thursday) afternoon, we had 5,250 tonnes of salt in stock and we’re still receiving deliveries from our regular supplier the Salt Union.

“We’re also expecting a delivery of 5,000 tonnes of imported salt, which is being co-ordinated by the Welsh Assembly Government and the Welsh Local Government Association.”

Forecasters expect a bleak weekend for Newtown with snow and sleet for Friday and Saturday but the sun could reappear on Sunday.
