Businessman escapes jail

A Newtown businessman has been given a suspended jail sentence after falsely trying to claim £27,000 in VAT repayments.

David Anthony Kelly, aged 44, of Vaynor, Newtown admitted five charges in relation to Vision Appliances when he appeared at Mold Crown Court newspapers have reported.

Kelly, who ran the company in partnership with his brother, tried to claim almost £27,000 in VAT which was not owed to him and then tried to evade the payment of £5,000 by producing false invoices. 

Kelly was given a 12 month suspended jail sentence and ordered to carry out 200 hours unpaid community work and pay £5,182 compensation and £500 costs.
