Cash boost for Powys economy

Millions of pounds are set to be pumped into the Powys economy to help boost rural communities. Up to £4 million of European funding will help to boost the regions tourism, culture and heritage.

Powys County Council announced that the money would promote such things as green tourism, sustainable energy, local manufacturing businesses and food.

The money has been funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development and the Welsh Assembly Government.

John Stephenson, Powys Regeneration Partnership Chairman said: "This is a significant amount of additional money which I expect to have a real impact within the county."
 

"Powys has some very exciting projects that will support local businesses and help to improve the quality of life for all in our communities."

He said that the money would go towards supporting Powys festivals and events and provide support for small groups wishing to run an event that enhances the tourism aspect of their community.
 

Low Carbon communities such as Llanidloes, which is currently planning hydro-power schemes, will also benefit from the funding.

Powys is one of 18 local partnerships across Wales that have prepared programmes within the RDP.

The projects will be delivered by organisations such as Glasu who delivered LEADER+, PAVO, Severn Wye Energy Agency, Powys Zero Waste, Mid Wales Manufacturing Group and Powys County Council itself.
