Police have closed a busy side road into Newtown with one eye witness reporting that a bridge has collapsed or suffered serious structural damage.
Details are still sketchy, but mynewtown can confirm that the B4568 from the A470 junction at Pont Dol Goch, which takes drivers on an alternative route into Newtown through Llanllwchaiarn, is closed.
Police are on the scene and the early indications are that no vehicles are involved nor casualties reported.
One motorist who was turned back at the scene tonight said: “It looks like the bridge has collapsed or something serious has happened to it. There was a lot of activity so I can’t see it being open for a few days.”
A police spokesperson confirmed: “The B4568 from the A470 junction, Pont Dol Goch, to the B4389 junction Aberbechain is closed due to structural damage to a bridge.”
Mynewtown will report more details as soon as they are confirmed. Motorists are advised to use an alternative route.
