Cadets show they care

23/12/2010 @ 11:37

The Powys Volunteer Cadets have once again shown their community spirit by organising an initiative to help local elderly and vulnerable residents.

Twenty-one elderly residents, who are less mobile in this cold snap, received an early Christmas present when the cadets delivered hampers that filled with essentials donated by local businesses and individuals.

Sergeant Jonathan Rees of the Newtown Neighbourhood Management Team said: “Not even the Powys weather can interrupt this initiative. Our cadets have recently spent time visiting and talking to elderly residents within the town and the deliveries follow this activity. During early 2011 we will be introducing the ‘NO COLD CALLING’ initiative aimed at reducing door step crime amongst elderly residents.”

PC Rashmita Wharton added: “The donations received have been overwhelming. Due to the generosity of those who have donated food items we can easily deliver 21 full hampers, which will hopefully provide essentials for those who may struggle to get out, or afford extra items over Christmas.”

During the delivery of hampers Police Officers gave further assistance to an elderly rural resident who had been without heating oil for two weeks, by collecting and delivering the essential fuel.

The cadets delivered the hampers in person with officers from the Newtown Neighbourhood Management Team. The initiative has been supported by Tesco, Lidl, Morrisons, Harry Tuffins, Spar, Pryce Jones and other local stores, as well as donations from police officers at the station.

The message from the Police Cadets is to encourage ‘good neighbourhood’ practices ensuring the entire community are safe and well during the winter and festive period.
