Vaynor residents call for action

Residents on one of Newtown’s busiest housing estates have called on authorities to clamp down on speeding traffic following a Friday incident involving a bus and a car.
The road close to the Flying Shuttle on Vaynor was disrupted for hours on Friday afternoon following the accident which took place as temperatures were plummeting and roads became hazardous.
But, while there is nothing to indicate Friday’s incident was anything more than an accident, residents have come forward to say that the road poses a number of problems.
“It is hazardous,” one mother of three told mynewtown after witnessing the accident. “Cars, vans and buses travel down there far too quickly and there is not enough done to try and slow them down. There are pavements but there are still large numbers of children that play close to the road or use it to get between friends’ houses so we are all concerned.”
Town Mayor Cllr. Joy Jones also lives in the area and agreed that something must be done before it is too late.
“There are speed bumps but bigger vehicles just seem to ignore them and travel far too quickly down there,” she said. “I have raised the issue before and will do it again because there are more accidents waiting to happen. It is a 30mph zone so perhaps it should be reduced to 20mph like other areas of the town? Something has to be done and sooner rather than later.”
