Police guard of honour at funeral

02/12/2010 @ 02:56

Dyfed Powys Police officers today formed a guard of honour outside Newtown Baptist Church at the funeral service of retired Police Constable David (Spud) Davies who died aged 63.

The church was packed by mourners from many walks of life who braved snow blizzards to pay their last respects to one of the area's best known policeman and sportsman who died after a short but brave fight against cancer on November 18.

Tributes were paid by former police colleagues, his borther Brian and partner Erryl to a packed congregation to a man described as one of the most popular policemen to serve in the Newtown and Welshpool areas with the Dyfed Powys Police and former Mid Wales Constabulary.

Originally from Llandrindod he was exceptionally well known in the area largely through his support of Liverpool Football Club and also his huge involvement in sport.

He was an accomplished goalkeeper with Llandrindod Wells and Crossgates before making a name for himself with both Berriew and Oswestry Town in the Southern League and in the Newtown Sunday League. He then took up snooker, dominoes and pool, being a founder player in the Newtown Pool League with the police based Nomads team. He was also a keen golfer and memebr of St Giles Golf Club.

Former colleague in the Dyfed Powys force travelled long journeys to pay their last respects and the church was packed with the many friends he had made at football, pool, snooker and dominoes.

Many of his fellow members of the Mid Wales Liverpool FC Supporters Club wore club shirts and scarves as a mark of respect and also acted as ushers.
