A big attendance is expected tomorrow (Thursday) at the funeral of a very well known former Newtown police officer and sportsman.

David Davies (Spud), who passed away on  Thursday, November 18 will be rememberd at a service at Newtown Baptist Church on Thursday at 12noon. He died after a short illness at his home in Newtown.

He was one of the most popular policemen to serve in the Newtown and Welshpool areas with the Dyded Powys Police and former Mid Wales Constabulary.

Originally from Llandrindod he was exceptionally well known in the area largely through his support of Liverpool Football Club and also his huge involvement in sport.

He was an accomplished goalkeeper with Llandrindod Wells and Crossgates before making a name for himself in the Newtown Sunday League. He then took up snooker, dominoes and pool, being a founder player in the Newtown Pool League with the police based Nomads team. He was also a keen golfer and memebr of St Giles Golf Club.

Owen Durbridge, Newtown Pool League Secretary and a former police colleague said, "I worked closely with Spud for 20 years and have known him for 30 years and can say that he was the most easy-going person I knew in the Police service, but he also possessed a huge amount of local knowledge that policemen today could only dream of.

"He was a reliable and trustworthy source of information to his colleagues and was extremely well known in the communities he worked where he was renowned for his friendly face and amenable nature.

"We will miss him very badly in the Nomads pool team and he will be missed also by the league members who knew him and enjoyed playing pool with him."
