Santa Run hit by the freezing weather

29/11/2010 @ 07:28

Newtown's traditional Santa Run was yesterday hit by the freezing temperatures that have gripped Mid Wales.

Only a few hyundred competitors took part in the race that in its heyday has attracted as many as 4,000.

Organised by disability charity Newtown and District Dial A Ride, Martin Corpus was the victorious Santa, with Rachel Butler triumphing in the women’s race.

Coachloads of Father Christmases were expected to attend the 4.5-mile race starting and finishing on Broad Street, but many competitors were put off by the cold weather.

Other winners included Callum Lloyd from Newtown in the boys’ section, and Hazel Davies in the girls’. The trophies were presented by the MP for Montgomeryshire Glyn Davies.

Commenting on the Santa Run Newtown County Councillor Russell George who took part himself said:
“It was very cold, but nice to run with snow on the ground. There were not as many Santa’s as in the past but the Santa Run happened here first.
"Well done to Newtown and District Dial a Ride who have raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for good causes over the years”
