Newtown's CK Supermarket on Pool Road will close down tomorrow (Friday) with the loss of eight jobs.
The company only purchased the store from the Co-operative in August last year.
The company also owns a supermarket in the Ladywell Shopping Centre.
Following the announcement Newtown Councillor Russell George has called for business rates to be slashed to support business and help encourage enterprise.
Cllr George said: “It’s a disappointing blow and I hope that staff at the store will be re-located locally.”
It has been confirmed that all eight staff members will be made redundant.
Cllr George added: “Businesses have not had the necessary support to help them through the recent recession. They are the backbone of the local economy and need to be supported.
“I believe that all businesses across Wales with a rateable value of under £12,000 should pay no business rates at all, and rates should be tapered for businesses with rateable values between £12,001 and £15,000. A cut in business rates will help businesses ride out the current economic downturn and secure local jobs.”
