Newtown board backs McNally

Newtown has greeted the news of its sensational Corbett Sports Welsh Premier survival by announcing that it will ‘break-even’ financially at its upcoming AGM.

The club finished nine points adrift at the foot of the top flight, and was preparing for life in the Huws Gray Alliance with Caersws and Guilsfield, but news of Neath failing to obtain a licence brought a dramatic change.

It all hinged on a result in South Wales where a win for Taffs Well would deny any side promotion from South Wales, meaning Newtown would fill the vacant spot. That match finished 5-1 on the same night that the club’s Board of Directors met to discuss next season.

The club immediately announced its support for boss Bernie McNally but accepted a lot has to be done.

“There were no excessive celebrations as Newtown gratefully accept their position in the Welsh Premier League with much humility,” the club’s web site stated. “Despite some very encouraging performances over the season and some unlucky defeats, the fact is that we finished nine points adrift and that is what the Management team will be trying to address during the pre-season period.

“The Board unanimously approved the continued appointment of Bernie McNally and hope he will remain as first team coach. Messages of support from the players shows that the majority of the current squad will opt to remain, if selected, which is pleasing as all agree there is the basis of a very good team at Newtown.

“The Board also approved the recommended budget for next season, but there are no new benefactors and the budget remains the same. This year's AGM will hear all the details, but the financial team, led by Barry Gardner, have made huge strides in reorganising income and expenditure at the Club and they will report a break-even situation due to the sensible cuts made 12 months ago.”
