Newtown will commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day next June, although the town council is likely to only put aside £3,000 toward an event.

Town councillors last night discussed the potential commemoration on 6 June 2024 with the Mayor, Cllr John Byrne, suggesting a budget of £7,500 should be put aside.

Cllr Peter Lewington said: "It is difficult to plan when we don't know what we want to do."

Cllr Richard Edwards said: "We need to know the size of the event."

The discussion came as town councillors also touched on the 2024/25 budget and a possible 11.4 per cent precept in its budget which will impact on residents through their Council Tax.

Cllr Chris Lewis said some groups in the town were considering activities for the D-Day commemoration and he said the town council could collaborate with them, including Newtown Civic Society.

Town councillors unanimously agreed to a budget of £3,000.
