Local groups could soon use town centre noticeboards

Electronic notice boards used by Newtown Town Council to promote its news and events in Newtown could be extended to provide wider community information.

The devices currently display town council notices, events, and local tourism. At Monday night's Economy and Environment Committee councillors will consider extending their use following representation from local community groups.

A report to councillors is recommending the extended use as part of their next phase.

It comes after the council encountered some technical issues with the boards and ways to update them which the report says have now been overcome.

The report said: "The Digital Noticeboards were initially purchased with the intention of displaying town council notices, events and providing tourism information to residents and visitors. However, a number of requests have been received from the community wishing to place materials on the noticeboards and it has been recognised that these noticeboards can serve a broader purpose within the community.

"The council has prioritised resolving hardware issues, which have been successfully addressed. Efforts are also underway to learn how to administer the software and content for the noticeboards, which is currently in progress.

"Following the successful installation and resolution of technical issues, the council has utilised the Digital Noticeboards to inform the community about upcoming events, council initiatives, and other informative content."

It added: "The idea of expanding the use of the Digital Noticeboards to promote the activities of external community organisations has been considered, as it represents a natural progression for this valuable community resource."

The committee has been asked to set a criteria for the extrenal use, including acceptable organisations, charges and fees, rotation of advertisements, and the relationship with physical notice boards.

Councillors will consider the matter at the committee meeting on Monday.
