Newtown's Salvation Army branch has launched its Christmas appeal and is asking people to donate gift vouchers from local shops.

The Christmas Present Appeal will help local families who might not have presents on Christmas Day.
"Every year, our Christmas Present Appeal makes a huge difference to thousands of families. Through the generosity of the public and business partners, we ensure that children in our community who might miss out on Christmas Day will instead have the joy of opening a gift," said Samantha Jones of the Salvation Army which is based in Market Street.
"This is only made possible with your help. To help us fundraise maybe you and your friends or colleagues would like to have a coffee morning, host a “wear a Christmas jumper day”, or donate instead of giving Christmas cards? Maybe you could collect all your 50 pence pieces for a month and donate those?
"Our Salvation Army Charity Shop and Prayer Space, 7-8 Market Street, Newtown will be collecting donations of gift vouchers for local stores, such as Charlies, No1 High Street and Argos. People wishing to donate online can use our JustGiving page, see link below.
"The Salvation Army is working closely with many agencies in the area and will place these vouchers in delightful gift bags and get them to hard working staff to be distributed in plenty of time for Christmas."
