New mayor to be elected

22/05/2022 @ 10:39

Despite Newtown Town Council having six vacant seats, a new mayor will be elected at Monday night's full council meeting.

Nobody contested a seat on the town coucil at the local elections earlier this month meaning 10 councillors were unapposed. However, it still meant six vcancies for councillors. The Tiownm Clerk will put forward options for the vacant seats at the meeting. These will include co-opting people on to the council, having more elections, or operating the council with just 10 members under special laws.

The mayor up until the elections was Cllr Richard Williams. He stood down from the council due to his residency and work in the town changing which meant he could not stand as a town councillor in Newtown.

Councillors will elect a new mayor and deputy mayor at Monday's meeting.
