Registry ceremony guest numbers to return to normal

Civil ceremonies and weddings at Newtown Registry Office will allow pre-pandemic numbers to attend, the county council has said.

MyNewtown reported how one couple's wedding was nearly cancelled after they were told only four people could attend in total.

It was only after Montgomeryshire MS, Russell George, took the matter up with Powys County Council's chief executive, Carolyn Turner, that their ceremony due to take place on Friday was permitted to have more guests.

The council had maintained Welsh Government guidelines from during the pandemic and had not returned them to normal levels despite Wales at Alert Level 0.

Today, the county council told MyNewtown that they had now changed the policy.

A spokesperson said: “The council is continuing its procedures in light of Welsh Government guidance. The council has decided that the numbers attending civil ceremonies can go back to their pre-pandemic numbers.”
