Couple told only four allowed at registry wedding

A couple had to nearly cancel their wedding in Newtown this Friday because the registry office was still imposing Covid-19 regulations only allowing four people to take part in the ceremony.

The couple, who have not been named, took it up with Montgomeryshire MS, Russell George, who contacted Powys County Council and within hours an exception was made to the rule.

But it's not known if the regulations will change permanently, despite Wales beign at Alert Level 0.

Powys County Council who are responsible for registry offices in Powys agreed to make an exception to the rule, following the intervention by Mr George.

Mr George contacted the Chief Executive Officer of Powys County Council, Dr Carolyn Turner, to raise concerns that the rules in place were unnecessary since all legal restrictions on gatherings had been lifted for some time.

He also asked for the rules to be reviewed urgently so the family and others planning to get married could fully enjoy their special day.

Mr George said: “I am very surprised that restrictions are still in place, particularly given that restrictions on gatherings have been lifted. It’s particularly surprising when the council itself has returned to allow meetings in County Hall with many councillors attending in person.

“I myself attended the local county and community councils election count where there were hundreds of people in one room and every week I attend the Senedd where members are physically present.”

He added: “I realise that risk assessments will need to take place for each type of situation, however, a wedding is such a special and important event in someone’s life, it is so important that this special day can be shared with close friends and family.

“I am grateful to the Chief Executive Officer for agreeing with me and for acting so quickly. I hope that all restrictions are lifted permanently."
