Where the environment and art combine

Local residents still have time to get involved in two environmental art projects.

Local art group Celf-Able’s two environmental art projects, ‘Coed Y Ddaear/EarthWood’ and ‘DaearGelf/EarthArt’ are rapidly coming to fruition and a workshop will take place in Newtown later this month.

"We have been making all kinds of art, including animation, land art, star books for a mobile and lots more about how sustainable living can be made possible for all in Montgomeryshire," said a spokesperson for the group.

"The tree sculptures for EarthWood are about the links between the environment and community."

A session will take place at Focus Newtown Enterprise Hub on 28 May.

They added: "There’s still time to join us on an Arty Saturday, we will be at Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT), Machynlleth on May 21st, Focus Newtown Enterprise Hub on May 28th, the Community Centre, Guilsfield on June 4th, the Institute, Llanfair Caereinion on June 11th, and on June 18th we will be launching the ‘DaearGelf/EarthArt’ exhibition at CAT."

Sessions run from 11am to 4pm.  The final session is at the Library Building (RDC), Llanfyllin on June 25th, when we will be finishing off and installing the tree sculptures.

‘DaearGelf/EarthArt’ is funded by Arts Council Wales and ‘Coed Y Ddaear/EarthWood’ is part of Engage Britain’s Reconnection Tour.

"If you’re not able to come to a session you can still take part, we invite everyone to make some leaves for the tree sculptures, just cut a leaf shape out of a recycled plastic milk carton and write on your messages about community and the environment in marker pen, or just do a pretty pattern," added the statement.

Then email admin@celf-able.org for details of how to send your leaves to us, and we will put them on the trees.

"We have been working with Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust, Siawns Teg, artist Jo Munton, the Centre for Alternative Technology and Montgomeryshire Youth Theatre.  The ‘DaearGelf/EarthArt’ exhibition will be on show at CAT for a month, and then will tour around Montgomeryshire," said the statement.

"‘Coed Y Ddaear/EarthWood’ will also tour to public spaces in Llanfyllin, Guilsfield, Machynlleth, Newtown and Llanfair Caereinion, so there’s plenty of chances to see all the artworks."

Celf-Able is an art group run by disabled and disability artists in Montgomeryshire. It provides opportunities for people to get together and do art, share and learn from each other.
