"Accident waiting to happen" says school governors

Governors at a Newtown primary school have raised road safety features affecting pupils - with a warning that there's an accident waiting to happen.

The governors at Penygloddfa Primary School have raised their concerns with Newtown Town Council over speed limits close to the school, lack of traffic calming measures and current building work at All Saints Church.

They say the situation is hazardous.

The town council has written to Powys County Council raising the matter, including the need for extra 20mps signs.

"This is not the first time these highways concernshave been raised by Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Councilin respect of Penygloddfa School and considering recent developments the town council supports the schools’requests for an urgent review of these issues," said Zak Howard, the council's development manager.

The governors wrote to the town council setting out their concerns. The letter states: The speed limit of 20mph is only signed in one direction at all times. An extra sign placed near the roundabout would reduce the speed of traffic approaching along Commercial Street.

"The Zebra Crossing and, likewise the Crossing Patrol Officer, are visually obstructed even more, now that there are several large vehicles in the area. The elevation of that Zebra Crossing, as has been done in other areas of the town, should be done as a matter of urgency.

"This would enable the crossing to be more visible and act as a traffic calming measure. Penygloddfa School is the largest Primary School in Newtown by some considerable margin but is the only school in Newtown that does not have traffic calming measures along the approaching roads."

It added: "St Mary's [school] has very high nspeed bumps" -the school is well off the Milford Road. The schools in Garthowen, Maesyrhandir and Treowen have all got these calming measures and they are not even on a main road.

"Ysgol Calon Y Dderwen has also, quite rightly, got traffic calming measures outside.Penygloddfa School does its utmost to promote a healthy lifestyle and encourages the children to walk or cycle to school.

"Parking is a major issue as parents are so worried that the area is not safe, hence the increased number of cars taking children to and from school. As we have stated before, this area is an accident waiting to happen and we urge you to take immediate action. Even when the work on the church is completed the area has been and will remain to be hazardous."
