£27 million is heading our way from the UK government

North Powys and the rest of the county will receive more than £27 million from the UK Government’s levelling up fund, with the Montgomeryshire Canal connection project set to be a major beneficiary.

The news has been welcomed by Montgomeryshire MP, Craig Williams, who made the announcement last night, but across Wales political rivals have criticised the amounts awarded to Wales with the First Minister claiming the country has been left shortchanged by London.

Mr Williams MP, said: “The continued investment into Montgomeryshire and Powys by the UK Government is brilliant news. This Shared Prosperity Fund money can be used on a range of projects across Powys, from regenerating our high streets, to providing training and helping young people into good jobs.

“The investment will help local residents across Montgomeryshire fulfil their potential by creating new opportunities, while reducing regional inequalities that have been left untouched for too long. The spending also confirms that the Conservative Government has fulfilled its commitment to match previous EU funding on social and regional development.

“By targeting this funding at local authority level, we will help spread opportunity and level up every part of Powys and Mid Wales.”

Powys will receive £27,443,340 out of the £2.6 billion UK total of levelling-up funding that according to the Government will “allow local communities to invest in local priorities from regenerating high streets to tackling economic decline, and will help reverse geographical inequalities”.

UK ministers say they will "slash bureaucracy and give control to locally elected leaders" in Wales in deciding how to spend nearly £600m over the next three years.

But a similar EU fund averaged £375m a year prompting Welsh First Minister, Mark Drakeford, to say Wales was “£1bn worse off in this package” and “people whose need is greatest will be getting less”.

But locally, campaigners are celebrating after it was confirmed that millions will be pumped into fast tracking a project that will reconnect the Montgomeryshire Canal with the rest of the UK canal network.
