Bikers targeted in local road safety campaign

With the Easter Bank Holiday weekend just days away, the area will once again be a destination for hundreds of motorcyclists.

Fire and rescue chiefs in the area have launched a campaign in attempt to reduce the number of serious injuries and deaths that occur in the area each year on local roads.

Routes through Newtown towards the coast, central Wales and North Wales are always a target for motorcyclists heading to tourist destinations.

Operatiom Darwin has been launched to target motorcyclists in the area.

"Over 22% of road deaths that occur in Wales involve motorcyclists and we need to reduce these figures to prevent fatal incidents and serious injuries to motorcycle riders and their passengers," said a spokespseron for Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue.

“Wales plays hosts to some fantastic scenery, winding roads and a number of motorcycle friendly businesses. However, there is concern around the number who sadly do not make it home safe from either a day out riding solo or with a group of friends.”

Operation Darwin is an initiative with the Welsh Fire and Rescue Services that takes place at identified biker assembly venues on popular biker routes in Wales.

Richard Davies, Road Safety Manager for Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: “Operation Darwin is a fantastic opportunity for us to engage with motorcyclists whilst they are out on their rides.  Providing this visibility also discourages speeding and dangerous driving, which of course can result in serious accidents on our Welsh Roads.”
