More people are heading to Newtown's Citizens Advice Bureau for financial help.
According to Citizens Advice Powys, it is seeing more people in financial crisis and demand for help continues to rise.
In a report to Newtown Town Council's Resources Committee, it states: "The main challenge we have found in this last quarter is dealing with people who are struggling both financially and with their mental health. Dealing with people who are stressed and anxious is a lot more time consuming and takes more than one phone call as part of their first advice appointment.
"This is particularly common amongst the people we are dealing with under the Specialist Debt service."
It adds: Our Specialist Debt caseworkers are finding that there are limited solutions to people's debt problems, very few people have sufficient income to start make any level of repayments to creditors, as they are barely able to meet their ongoing liabilities and essential living needs.
"Most people in this situation are reliant on benefits or are working poor. Our team are dealing with immediate debt issues but are not able to solve the long-term issues of low income and expect that these people's debt issues will re-occur in the future. Our team are finding a higher number of people are this financial crisis situation."
The charity now has a dedicated debt advisor and that is one reason why demand for help has risen.
The town council provides additional funding to the charity to help people in Newtown.
In the report, the Citizens Advice said: "Additional funding provided by Newtown Town Council has enabled us to train one of existing advisers as a Debt adviser and to deliver an additional advice day per week, offering Debt appointments for residents of Newtown.
"Since this additional service began 1stNov to 31stDec 2021, our adviser has dealt with £11,476 of debton behalf of 3 clients. The Debt adviser has also been able to assist our Specialist Debt team to work with clients requiring Debt Relief Orders. This quarter Newtown Advice project clientshavebeen assisted to write off £23,568of debt."
One client thanked the service for helping them. They stated: “My advisor went over and beyond to assist me. Also provided very good advice and always just a phone call away if I needed to discuss/ask any questions about my case.
"All in all I found my advisor very helpful, friendly, knowledgeable and always in a professional manner. What I also found that due to dealing with the same person throughout, they’re familiarity with the case etc, meant that I was able to receive the highest level of assistance/advice.CAB-amazing.
"I’ll be sure to return to my local CAB for advise in the future . So grateful you were there for me."
